A day in the the workshop (wasted)… PMA
April 21, 2009So after spending a day modeling in the workshop, I realised that what I managed to produce was pretty much useless, whilst also rediscovering that I hate maths. The drawings I was working off were missing a vital componant. When adding this componant back into the mix, it is not as simple as just making the design a little bigger. Angles are involved. A protractor has just been purchased. I am not happy. I shall start from fresh tomorrow – hopefully suceeding in making a working model…PMA…
One thing I did actually gain… I realised I bought rubbish plywood…
Eating Scenarios
April 21, 2009Again, another film that wont upload… but a documentation of using the bpm application in a scenario.
Work to be developed in this area, as I would like to link it back up to music rather than just beats, and look at playlists with matching tempos to bpms… another ‘watch this space’.
Eating 7.0
April 21, 2009I have a film… which doesnt like blogs apparently, but documenting bpm….
I will keep trying to upload it, so watch this space…
Kettle and Plant are connected…
April 15, 2009
The circuit has been made (and currently works), connecting a rather sad and dry plant to the kitchen kettle … I shall note its ongoing progress.
If the plant is dry, the kettle wont boil.
The magic box…
Modelling scales
April 15, 2009I have been making the mechanism that will allow you to see the screen on the scales. It works by a cover rotating when four buttons are pressed (one for each foot).
Cardboard Models:
Closed
Open
Really quick (and rather roughly done) mock up of scale…
Soil Moisture Sensor
April 15, 2009
Making a Maplins kit – a starting point for a moisture sensor connected to a plant.
The circuit board sits in a plant pot, and an LED flashes if the plant needs watering.
Routine Makers. Routine Breakers.
April 8, 2009Routine Makers, Routine Breakers is an exploration into the patterns of everyday life. It looks at the actions that make up these patterns, routines and habits we all fall into, through the objects and users involved.
It is said that it takes 21 days to form a habit, and that having a ‘buddy’ can increase success rates in change. My project looks to explore how existing methods of change can be applied to design and the re-appropriation of existing objects.

BPM
I have been making my own metronome beats for eating along to. They are currently mp3s which I have added to a playlist in my iTunes – so I can upload them onto my iPod. I am hoping to start filming to illustrate this idea soon.
I am looking at a technical re-appropriation, using a technology that already exists to my advantage. I am looking into iPod accessories and attachments to use as well, to design the scenario this idea will work in. Ways the iPod could be attached to tables, chairs or the person. I have also been adapting headphones so they only have one ear piece.
The playlist acts as a subliminal reminder of a different pace to eat at.
